We absolutely cannot talk about eczema without discussing topical steroids.

Whether over the counter (OTC) e.g. 1% hydrocortisone in all of its forms, or stronger prescription varieties, topical steroids are probably the most widely prescribed treatments for eczema and I have had a long relationship with them. Over the decades, I have learned side effects and personally experienced steroid dependency (please refer to this NCBI scholarly article on the topic for more information).

Steroids are also so readily available, that it’s easy to over-use them. That said, if you’re having a really bad flare, it’s sometimes necessary to turn to topical steriods like Cortisone or even stronger versions available by prescription only.

Long-term, I’ve been happier with a less-is-more approach to steroids. I try to exhaust my other “tricks” and use steroids for as short a period as possible.

*Pro tips:

  1. For me at least, ointments are more effective/faster acting than creams.
  2. Put them in the fridge; the coolness feels extra soothing (tip courtesy of my allergist).
